Table Topics

Today for Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program, Red Riding Hood had to give a speech. I gave one last week, and today I was Table Topics Master. The job of Table Topics Master is to give each table topics speaker a topic, which they have to speak about for 1-2 minutes.  They don't know what the the topics are going to be, so it helps improvisation skills. Here are the topics I gave them. They were all on the theme of fantasy creature how-tos. (not in order). Not all of these were used; one girl was sick.

-How to prepare and cook dragon meat.
        -How to catch a leprechaun.
        -How to ride Pegasus.
-How to catch a criminal shapeshifter.
        -How to hunt a unicorn.
-How to housetrain a pet phoenix.
-How to do a giant's hair.
        -How to find a fairy.

Over all, it went pretty well for Red Riding Hood and me. Bad things that happened- I accidentally skipped someone and didn't realize until it was over, and we were driving home. Judging from the reactions and speeches of the Table Topics speakers, I think these topics were a little too difficult. What do you think? (keep in mind that they have no time to gather their thoughts before hand, they literally have to think and spaek at the same time).

  1. It sounds like a lot of fun! I think I may have to use these as our own table discussions at the dinner table!

I think the topics you chose were fun and interesting, though I don't know that I would be able to come up with choosing the right words in that short of time.

Overall, I think the challenge of the game sounds like it was a lot of fun. Sounds like you did a good job!

  2. What fun! So, how DO you catch a criminal shapeshifter?

I think one way of telling whether the topics are too difficult would be to assign a really easy topic ("How to make a peanut butter sandwich") and see whether people struggle with that, too. If not, then it may just be that you need to have thought about the topic beforehand in order to speak on it right away.
